McNamara House, Boston
This 80-unit elderly and handicapped housing program was
developed under the HUD 202/8 program.
Included in the program is an elderly nutritional site. The campus includes both rehabilitation of a
convent and new construction.
St. Helena’s House, Boston
St. Helena’s House provides housing to very
needy and frail elders as well as to many de-institutionalized patients. A nine-room transitional housing unit was
created for this purpose. The 74-unit
rehab is a model site for the provision of services to elders and handicapped
persons in an independent environment.
West End Place, Boston
Jerry led the Archdiocese team through the design and
planning stages of this new construction development, which was a joint venture
with Keen Development Corporation. The
building includes 183 units of new housing as well as commercial space, with a
landscaped courtyard. The design was
honored by the New England AIA.
Constitution
Cooperative, Boston
This project consisted of rehabilitating an old school and
building a new addition. An
archaeological survey was performed on this site before construction began for
120 units of elderly housing. The
Constitution Coop is another cooperatively-owned site co-sponsored by the
Archdiocese of Boston and Cooperative Services, Inc. of Detroit, MI.
Paul Revere

The conversion of the historic Paul Revere
School has served as a
model for more recent mixed-income developments. The privately financed rehabilitation created
24 units of family housing – 13 units were sold as market-rate condominiums,
and the rest are owned by a limited equity cooperative that serves low and
moderate families.
Polcari Playground, Boston
This neighborhood playground in Boston’s North End was developed over three
years as a community project. The
residents offered input about the park’s development and design. This was developed as part of the overall
community process and was funded by various City of Boston and private sources.
Siena Village,
Watertown
This site owned by the Dominican Sisters exemplifies the
possible creative reuse of Church-owned properties. Redevelopment of an abandoned boarding school
created 59 market-rate condominiums, a day care center, a retirement community
for religious women, and a 25 unit elderly housing development.
Hesed House, Billerica
Here, the HUD 202/8 program was used to develop a group
home. Hesed House serves 8 mentally
retarded individuals in both dependent and independent settings. This program involved redevelopment of an
existing single-family residence along with an addition that was sensitive to
the site and its historic neighborhood.
St. Cecilia’s House, Boston
This site was developed as an elderly housing development
under the HUD 202/8 program with a special emphasis on providing a continuum of
care. Strategic alliances were developed
with social service agencies of the Archdiocese to bring needed medical and
social services to the residents.
Physically, this property was designed with state-of-the-art ground
source heat pumps.

The Archdiocese of Boston and Cooperative Services, Inc. (Detroit, MI)
co-sponsored this HUD 202/8 site.
Residents own and operate this 100-unit housing for the elderly and
handicapped.
Mt. Carmel
Elderly Housing, Worcester
Mt. Carmel’s 75 units of elderly and
handicapped housing were developed under the HUD 202/8 program. This was developed in association with the
Diocese of Worcester and was the first project of its type within the Diocese.
Archdiocesan Center Masterplan, Boston
This masterplan for the Archdiocese looked at developing
housing along with a new central high school and grammar school. Conference space for future Archdiocesan
needs was also included.
Friendly Garden Cooperative, Revere
This development offers a unique housing opportunity. The 100-unit building, designed for the
elderly and handicapped, is owned and operated by its residents. Friendly
Garden was co-sponsored by the
Archdiocese of Boston and Cooperative Services, Inc. (Detroit, MI).

coordination effort at the submarine base in New London, Connecticut. Responsible for coordination of the Bovis
Lend Lease effort, including constructability reviews, design coordination and
